[T]he magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not ... The magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Exodus 8:18-19a

God and Pharaoh were locked in battle over freedom for the Hebrews; the magicians, the really smart ones, finally realized it was a one sided fight.

They admitted what even God's people sometimes forget - its not God's power they were no match for, it was just his finger.
